What's Happening at the Library in Sept.?

There's lots going on at the Library for adults and kids in September!

For Adults:

Wellness Talk: Introduction to Cleansing (Wed., Sept. 11, 6:00 pm): Open any main stream magazine in the spring or fall and you're likely to see something about 'detox' or cleansing.  What's the big deal?!  Join Dr. Katie from Ahimsa Naturopathic to learn how your body naturally rids itself of toxins and by-products and what you can do to help or hinder this process.  Ahimsa Naturopathic will be running another 'group cleanse' this fall.  This talk is a great opportunity to ask questions and find out whether 'cleansing' might be helpful for you!

Off the Shelf! (Mon., Sept. 16, 7:00 pm):  Our popular "Readings for Adults" program is back for a new season!  Join us this month as members of Theatre Night in Merrickville "brush up their Shakespeare".  Don't miss it!

Cookbook Swap (Mon., Sept. 30, 7:00 pm):  Everyone has a lovely cookbook that they somehow just never use.  Bring it to our Cookbook Swap and exchange it for one that will fire up your burners.  Bring a sample snack - sweet or savoury - from your cookbook to help it find a new home (and to make the evening that much more fun).  Contact the library to let us know you're coming.

For Children:

Juice Jam (Sat. Sept. 21, 10:30am):  Music program with Polly Beach for ages 7 & under.  Join us for songs, rhythm instruments, lots of audience participation, & a snack.

StoryTime is Back! (Fridays, 10:00(ish)): Bring your toddler or preschooler (ages 5 & under) to the library for our drop-in StoryTime.  It's a great way to develop your child’s early literacy and group interaction skills in a fun and relaxed setting.  StoryTime uses the Every Child Ready To Read pre-literacy programming which promotes 6 key skills for toddlers and preschoolers that will help them to become successful readers in school.  StoryTime helps build these skills using stories related to a theme, songs, rhymes & rhythm instruments, and a simple craft.  New StoryTimers are always welcome!  September’s themes are: Trucks, Farms, Pigs, & Head to Toe.

LEGO Club (Saturdays, 10 - 12 noon):  Our Saturday morning LEGO drop-in continues in Sept.  Join us for brick-filled building fun for ages 4-12.

Bulb Sale Fundraiser - Sept. 3 - 7

The Friends of the Library will be selling Vesey bulbs from Sept. 3 - 7 at the Royal Bank to raise funds for the library. 

The colourful selection includes: purple passion blend tulips, sky blue lilies, pink daffodils, giant purple allium, plus spring flowers (crocuses, windflowers, etc.) and several assortments. 

Enhance your garden and your library at the same time!

LIBRARY CLOSED - Aug. 23 - Sep. 2

The library will be closed from Aug. 23 – Sept. 2.  

We will reopen at our regular hours on Tues., Sept. 3.

Genealogy workshop - Sat., Aug. 17

Interested in researching your family tree? 

Join us Sat. Aug. 17, 10:30 am at the Library for a Genealogy Workshop, with John Harris. 
 
This workshop will focus on Ancestry LibraryEdition (a subscription genealogy database available free through the library) and other online genealogy resources. 

Register (or call 613-269-3326) and find out how much family history is only a mouse click away.

Ancestry LibraryEdition is made available to libraries through funding from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

Library Events in August!

This month the Library will be offering a Genealogy Workshop for adults, and continuing our summer children's programs!

Genealogy Workshop (Sat. Aug. 17, 10:30 am):  Interested in researching your family tree?  This workshop, with John Harris, will focus on Ancestry.ca (subscription genealogy database available free through the library) and other online genealogy resources.  Register and find out how much family history is only a mouse click away.

Summer Reading Club:  The library is running the TD Summer Reading Club “Go!” to encourage reading for kids of all ages!  If you’re not involved yet, it’s not too late!  Get a ticket our Prize Draw for each book read - plus get a "souvenir" when you return your books!  We also have crafts & activities on Thursday afternoons at 1:00.  Contact the library for more info.

LEGO Club (Saturdays, 10 - 12 noon):  Saturday mornings are LEGO time at the library this summer.  Drop in anytime between 10 and noon for some brick-filled building fun for ages 4-12.

StoryTime (Fridays, 10ish):  StoryTime for ages 6 & under (and a parent/caregiver) continues through the summer! 

Vacation Closing:  Please note – the library will be closed Aug. 23 – Sept. 2.  Don’t forget to come by and stock up on books and DVDs!  The library's eBooks and other eResources will still be available through our website while we are closed.

Museum passes - great for summer!

Don't forget the Library has museum passes to several popular Ottawa museums:

• The Agricultural Museum
• The Aviation & Space Museum
• The Museum of Civilization
• The Museum of Nature
• The Museum of Science & Technology
• The War Museum
• plus, all the museums in the Ottawa Museum Network!

Passes let in 5 people (up to 2 adults, usually) for free!

Play Soccer at the Library!

A beautiful day at the park - but no ball to kick around?  No problem! 

The Library, in partnership with the Merrickville Soccer Club, now lends soccer balls for use in the athletic field next door.
