Library Events in July!

The Library is closed for Canada Day (we are open June 30) - then we come back with lots of  great summer activities for kids - and for adults!
All events are free of charge.  For more information - or to register, please contact the library (or 613-269-3326).

TD Summer Reading Club Is Here!:
Calling all kids to “Eureka!” – this year’s TD Summer Reading Club for ages 5 and up (sponsored by the TD Financial Group)!  Join and get a activity book, & stickers – and get a ticket for our summer prize draws for each book you read!  The TD Summer Reading Club can be done as an independent reading program - or join us for our Thursday afternoon “maker” activities.  Summer reading programs have been shown to preserve and enhance literacy skills over the summer - they encourage kids to read for pleasure and develop the reading habit.

Reading Club Maker Activities (Thursday afternoons, starts July 3):
This summer’s Club theme is all about unleashing our creativity and discovering how to make cool stuff.   This year, we’ll have 2 groups meeting on Thurs. afternoons:

  • K to Gr 3 kids from 1:00 to 2:00,
  • Gr 4 & up from 2:00 until 3:00(ish)
Our activities will include Brenda Carter Memorial Art Workshops for Kids, making mosaic art with Debbie Alexander, of “Creative Play & Art Exploration for Children and Adults”.

More Activities for Kids in July:
Juice Jam (Sat. July 5, 10:30 am):

Polly Beach is back with another Juice Jam music program  - with singing, rhythm instruments, lots of audience participation, and juice! -  for ages 7 & under.

French Club (starts Wed, July 9, 6:30 pm):
This summer we are starting a French Club for kids.  Come for a variety of fun activities (LEGO, games, crafts, whatever) while speaking French.  Kids can also check out French books as part of the Summer Reading Club.  If you are interested in French Club but can’t make this meeting, contact the library.

Pokemon-polooza (Sat, July 12, 10 - 12 am):
Love Pokemon?  Show off your Pokémon card collection, trade, battle and play games (for ages 6+).

Prize-Winning Fair Crafts! (Sat, July 26 at 10:30 am):

Interested in winning a ribbon in the Merrickville Agricultural Fair?   Come to the library to make something from the Fair’s list of arts & crafts to enter as an exhibit.  There are a variety of crafts for pre-schoolers to age 16.  Supplies provided.

LEGO Club (Saturdays, 10 - 12 noon):
Building with LEGO is another great maker activity, and our LEGO Club continues on Saturday mornings between 10 and noon.  This summer we will try some special building ideas to display in the library!

StoryTime (Fridays, 10ish):

StoryTime for ages 6 & under (and a parent/caregiver) continues through the summer!   It’s a fun way to prepare for starting school this fall.  We’ll have a special guest and activity on July 11.

Museum Passes:
Eureka! is about discovery – and there’s lots to discover when you borrow a family pass for these Ottawa museums:  Canadian History, Nature, Science & Technology, Agriculture, Space, War - and the Ottawa Museum Network.  Many museums have special summer events.

For Adults:
Off the Shelf! (Mon, July 21, 7:00 pm):
Off the Shelf is wrapping up the season with an extra-special evening of literary entertainment (and light refreshments) for adult listeners.   Come and see what we have in store for you!  (Off the Shelf will return  in Sept.).

RBC Small Business Seminar (Wed, July 23, 6:30 pm):
Find out more about financing, managing cash flow, and succession planning for your small business at this seminar by representatives from the RBC.

Antioxidants: feel and look young (Mon, July 28, 7:00 pm):
Learn to use antioxidants to fight the external and internal signs of aging, at any age. Antioxidants can be our secret weapon to:

  •  help the skin look younger and our internal organs remain healthy
  •  fight the attack of pollution, external and internal toxins
  •  counter the effects of normal everyday aging processes
Summer is the perfect time of the year to start adding antioxidants to our diet.  Find out more at this talk by Holistic Nutritionist Karin Martinelli.

Juice Jam - rescheduled to Sat, July 5
