What's Happening in October!

 There's lots happening at the Library this month - including a Halloween Howl for the kids, an Open House to celebrate Ontario Library Week, and the return of “Read to Every Kid”!

Computer Help! - File Transfer Tutorials (Sat, Oct. 3):

Movie Club (Thurs, Oct. 15, 2:00 pm):  
continues to meet once a month for a film & discussion (contact the library to find out this month’s film).  New members welcome.

Open House (Sat, Oct. 24, 10:30am – 3:30pm):  
The new library board will be celebrating Ontario Public Library Week with an Open House!  Drop by on Oct. 24 to meet the board, tell them what you’d like to see at the library, check out what’s new, or just sample the refreshments.  If you haven’t been to the library lately, you’ll want to come and see what’s been described as “the most beautiful library I’ve ever seen” (and not just by us).

Off the Shelf! (Mon, Oct. 26, 7:00 pm):  
Don’t miss this month’s literary gems for adult listeners.  This month we’ll be enjoying an entertaining selection of readings about harvest and Halloween.
 


Library activities for kids in October!
Halloween Howl (Sat, Oct. 24, 10:30 am):  
Join us as we put the “BOO” into Books with Halloween stories - plus music & rhythm instruments, lots of audience participation, and a snack!  Fun for ages 8 & under.  Wear your costume or come as you are!

PA Day Movie (Fri, Oct. 30, 2:00 pm):
Looking for something to do this PA Day?  Come to the Library for a kid-friendly movie to keep that Halloween mood going.  Contact the Library for details.

Read to Every Kid Challenge:
Help choose Leeds-Grenville's favourite children’s book!  The Read to Every Kid Challenge is kicking off its 5th year in October!  Children and parents are invited to read the 10 selected picture books and then vote for their favourite.  The books will be available to borrow at the library.  This is a county wide literacy initiative that promotes the importance of daily reading to children.


Drama Club (Wednesdays, after school):
Our new Drama Club for kids (age 10 and up) is lots of fun.  Join us after school on Wednesday afternoons.

Youth Group  
Youth Group continues to meet.  Contact the library for dates and more info.

StoryTime (Fridays, 10(ish)) & LEGO Club (Saturdays, 10 - 12 noon):  
continue in Oct.  New kids are always welcome!

Ontario supports Libraries!

The Library would like to acknowledge the Capacity Building Grant received from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport as part of a 3 year program to assist public libraries in upgrading their computer technology.  

We have used the funds to update computers and software, add larger monitors, an iPad, and a lending ebook reader.

 This year we have a planned program of themes that host Martin Green promises will delight audiences.  

Over the years Off the Shelf has built up an enthusiastic group of readers and listeners – but there’s always room for more.  Mark the 3rd Monday of the month on your calendars, or contact the library if you’d like to be added to our e-mail reminder list.

Youth Group - Sat, Sept 12 at 1:00 pm

  Our Youth Group (for ages 10-14) will kick off the new school year, with some Nail Art! Come learn how to rock your manicure! 

Come for StoryTime - Friday mornings at 10(ish)

Bring your toddler or preschooler (ages 5 & under) to the library for StoryTime.

Our drop-in StoryTime is a great way to develop your child’s early literacy and group interaction skills in a fun and relaxed setting.  StoryTime uses the Every Child Ready To Read pre-literacy programming to promote key skills that will help your child become a successful reader – through stories related to a theme, songs, rhymes & rhythm instruments, and a simple craft.  

New StoryTimers are always welcome!  
September’s themes are: Head to Toe, Farms, and Trucks!

Fall Bulb Sale Fundraiser Sept 8 - 12

Back by popular demand!  

The Friends of the Library will be selling Vesey bulbs from Sept. 8 - 12 at the Merrickville Royal Bank to raise funds for the library.  

The colourful selection includes: purple passion blend tulips, sky blue lilies, pink daffodils, giant purple allium, plus spring flowers (crocuses, windflowers, etc.) and several assortments.  Enhance your garden and your library at the same time!
